Disney World Unveils New "Million Dreams" Attractions
Posted 01/29/07
New technologies, interactive online tools and in-park experiences are making Walt Disney World vacations more personal and taking guest service to a new level during "The Year of a Million Dreams" celebration. New attractions introduced last week as part of the "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion include "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" attraction at Epcot. Guests can engage in live, unrehearsed dialogue with Crush, the turtle from the film "Finding Nemo." New technology enables other stars from the movie to appear to swim with the marine life in the 5.7-million-gallon aquarium.
Through immersive and interactive features, guests at "Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club," opening this spring in Magic Kingdom, will be able to participate in the show by text messaging jokes from their cell phone for possible use in the show. This live, unscripted entertainment experience currently in development is the next generation of real-time animation that uses digital projection and voice-activated animation.
Unused space within the Magic Kingdom originally envisioned as in-park accommodations for the Disney family has been transformed into Cinderella Castle Suite -- a place where Walt Disney World guests can now spend a night amid surroundings that hark back to the 17th century fairytale and the French chateaus that inspired the design of Cinderella Castle. Eligible Walt Disney World guests will be selected randomly at one of the theme parks or Downtown Disney, as part of the "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion, by early afternoon most days now through the end of 2007. The guest and up to five members of their party begin their evening at Cinderella's Royal Table, the restaurant located in Cinderella Castle before settling into their suite, located four stories above the surrounding Magic Kingdom. The suite includes a salon, bedchamber and bathroom off a private marble-floored foyer, all replete with rich details.
New concepts designed to help tailor guests' vacation experiences include: Disney's new PhotoPass albums with online scrapbooking tools and the ability to combine personal photos with professional photos taken by Disney's PhotoPass team as well as add different backgrounds and personalize text. Disney's online concierge at Disney's Contemporary Resort lets vacationers order room service, play games, make tee times and more right from their own hotel rooms. This interactive service is currently in pilot testing. Through advances in wireless communication, Pal Mickey, a huggable plush toy, acts as a tour guide at each of the four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort. Offering timesaving tips, trivia, fun facts and more, Pal Mickey helps navigate the parks so guests get the most out of their time in the parks.
A new Walt Disney World after-hours event began in Magic Kingdom Jan. 22, 2007, with Disney's Pirate and Princess Party, a treasure hunt for items like chocolate doubloons and colorful beads. Guests can explore pirate coves and princess courts filled with themed entertainment, participate in character meet-and-greets and enjoy Magic Kingdom attractions open throughout the evening. Guests are invited to dress up in a favorite princess gown or pirate garb to add to the fun. Adding to the magic of the immersive event will be two new nighttime entertainment spectaculars, "Disney's Enchanted Adventures Parade" and "Magic, Music and Mayhem," a fireworks display orchestrated to an original musical score. Other party highlights include a dance party, haunted riverboat, court musicians, jugglers and more. Day-of tickets are priced at $42.95 plus tax, for ages 10 and over, $35.95 plus tax, for ages three to nine. Advance tickets for all nights are $36.95 plus tax, for ages 10 and over and $29.95 plus tax, for ages three to nine. Party nights: Jan. 22, 26, 29, Feb. 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 23, 26 and March 2, 5, 8 from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Also new at the Disney World is the "High School Musical Pep Rally," a new immersive show for the whole family now at Disney-MGM Studios as part of "The Year of a Million Dreams." Throughout the park, a multi-talented team of entertainers re-creates the world of East High. Theme park guests may find themselves shooting hoops or joining in as the whole street turns into a rockin' party while great songs fill the air, from "Breaking Free" and "Getcha Head in the Game" to "We're All in This Together. One of the most memorable events held each year aboard each Princess ship is a group renewal of vows ceremony performed by the captain on February 14. More than 5,000 couples fleetwide typically celebrate their love by participating in this Valentine's Day tradition.
Other heart-themed shipboard festivities include a festive Valentine's dinner capped off by one of the line's most popular desserts "The Princess Love Boat Dream," a Valentine's rendition of the "Newlywed and Not-So-Newlywed Game," a Valentine's Singles Party, Hearts card game lessons and tournament, a special honeymooners cocktail party, romance-themed films and plenty of other activities in keeping with the Valentine's spirit.

Seven-night cruises from Paris on the Seine on the five-star MV Cezanne and from Lyon on the Rhône and Saône rivers on the four-star MV Princesse de Provence to Burgundy and Beaujolais wine regions and Provencal cities are among the European river sailings of Peter Deilmann Cruises that begin March 24 and continue through Nov. 10. The weekly Seine River cruises aboard the 50-cabin Cezanne sail to Les Andelys, the small town of Caudebec-en-Caux, the ancient city of Rouen with its cathedral and Musée des Beaux-Arts with paintings by Impressionists Monet, Sisley, Boudin and Pisarro and the charming town of Vernon to visit Giverney. The Cezanne cruises provide overnight stays on the ship in Paris, Caudebec-en-Caux and Rouen. Most of the cruises sail roundtrip; three will sail one way from Paris to Rouen and three from Rouen to Paris. These six will feature two nights on board ship in Paris.
Deilmann's optional package of Seine excursions -- a Paris city tour, the ruins of Château Gaillard at Les Andelys, the seaside village of Honfleur with its rich artistic and historic heritage, Rouen and the home and gardens of Impressionist painter Claude Monet at Giverny -- cost just $205 when purchased in advance. Among the ports of call on the Saône and Rhône cruises sailing from Lyon on the Princesse de Provence are Tournus, Chalon-sur-Saône, Macon, Trévoux, Tournon, Avignon and Arles. Optional excursions take passengers along Burgundy and Beaujolais wine routes.
Passengers can tour the Burgundy wine region visiting medieval Beaune, center of the wine trade. At Mâcon, there is a choice of excursions to the remains of the 12th century abbey at Cluny or to the wine-growing region of the Maconnais and a wine tasting. From Trévoux, there is an opportunity to tour the Saône valley and the vineyards and villages of Beaujolais wines.
In Arles, passengers have a full day to explore the city's many Roman antiquities or visit the Camargue, the nature reserve that is home to herds of white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos. Within the walled city of Avignon are the 14th century papal palace, 12th century cathedral, late Gothic churches, museums, elegant town houses and cardinal's palaces.
Deilmann offers five different cruise tours on its French cruises, both independent and escorted. One of the most popular is the 16-day "Exploring France" cruise tour that combines the Seine and Rhône cruises into one itinerary. The 15-night program begins in Lyon, ends in Paris, provides a TGV train connection from Lyon to Paris and includes 11 shore excursions. There are seven departures between April 6 and Oct. 26 and prices start at $3,100 per person double. Among escorted cruise tours is a 12-day "Coast of Normandy" program that combines a Seine cruise with three nights in Deauville at the Hotel Normandie Barriere with daily breakfast, four sightseeing tours, five shore excursions and the services of an experienced tour manager. Departures begin May 9 and prices start at $4,199 per person, double occupancy. The cruise line's "Discovery Add-ons," also allow travelers to extend their stay at a choice of destinations.
Special interest theme cruises on the Cezanne and Princesse de Provence offer biking, hiking, gardens and golf. New hiking programs are part of five cruises on the Seine and Rhône with departures between May 19 and Sept. 22. Four Cezanne sailings between June 2 and Aug. 18 offer biking theme programs, two garden themes are scheduled in June and two golf theme cruises depart Sept. 15 and Oct. 6.
Cruise-only rates for seven-night sailings on the Cezanne range from $1,525 to $2,595 per person for a twin-bedded cabin. Princesse de Provence cruises are priced from $1,375 to $2,200 per person for a twin cabin. Deilmann arranges air transportation, meet and greet service and transfers between airports and ships. The cruise also visits Rouen, Le Havre, Honfleur and Vernon for an excursion to Monet's Giverny. The last evening onboard includes the Captain's Farewell Dinner as the ship sails back to Paris. An optional three-night pre-cruise package includes accommodations at Le Meridian Montparnasse (or similar) with breakfast daily, a guided "Arts and the Artists" tours of Montmartre and the Louvre, and transfers from the airport to your hotel and from your hotel to the ship. The cruise is priced from $1,798 per person, cruise only. Sailings begin March 25, and those who book and deposit a trip by March 31 will save $200 per couple or $100 per person, excluding the April 29 and May 13 sail dates.

Regent Seven Seas Unveils New Circles of Interest
Posted 03/07/07
Regent Seven Seas Cruises unveiled five new Art, Design and Cultures Circles of Interest for Mediterranean and Baltic cruises this summer aboard the 700-guest, all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Voyager and 490-guest all-suite Seven Seas Navigator. Circles of Interest offer guests the opportunity to discover a destination through a lens of particular interest, with the insights of an expert guest host and the camaraderie of a smaller community of guests who share similar interests. As part of the recently launched Regent Art Experience and Endowment Program, a partnership with the Bass Museum of Art on Miami Beach, brings executive director and chief curator Diane Camber to Regent, leading guests on four Circles of Interest aboard three Mediterranean sailings.
Each of the four Circle of Interest programs includes a private welcome cocktail party, dinner, onboard lecture, and an exclusive shore experience with unique and private access. Participation is limited to 30 guests. In addition to planned onboard and on shore activities, Camber will help facilitate smaller community events where possible. The July 19 and Aug. 11 Mediterranean sailings aboard Seven Seas Navigator both feature two Circle of Interest programs. During the first Circle, "Power, Passion & Glory-Diane Camber's Florence," Circle of Interest guests will join Camber for visits to the Museum of San Marco; the Medici Chapels and six tombs of the Medici Grand Dukes, adorned with some of Michelangelo's most famous sculptures; the Piazza del Duomo, Baptistery and Cathedral; Brancacci Chapel; and a drive through the Piazzale Michelangelo. Guests will also explore the role of the Medici in religion and have a lunch of local flavor. Cost is $315 per guest.
The second Circle of Interest on those sailings is "Les Artistes de la Côte d'Azur," where Camber will share her knowledge of the works at the Musée Matisse and Musée Nationale Marc Chagall. Guests will also witness the beauty of the French Riviera through a private drive. Cost is $175 per guest. The Aug. 11 voyage includes a private discussion on "Modernity: Gaudí, Miró and Picasso." The Aug. 18 sailing of Seven Seas Navigator also features two Circles of Interest. The first, "Passione per l'arte-A Personal View with Diane Camber," includes a shore experience where guests will travel by private water taxi to the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, which holds the largest private contemporary art collection and is owned by Francois Pinault, one of the world's richest men. Later, a short ride brings guests to another bastion of contemporary art: the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, housed in her personal villa. Cost is $255 per guest. The second Circle of Interest on that sailing is "Stabbiano di Castelammare-Dig for History, Art and Local Flavor." A private coach will give guests the opportunity to see an excavation of the Roman villas of ancient Stabiae. En route back to Sorrento, guests will stop at a typical farm house to learn how mozzarella is made and have a light lunch of local specialties. Cost is $175 per guest. On the Aug. 18 voyage, the Circle of Interest programs will include an exclusive talk on the culture, art and architecture of the Adriatic. Camber will also discuss Caravaggio. Per person prices for European voyages featuring Art, Design and Cultures Circles of Interest start at $4,796. For more information, call 800-913-7245
Silversea Cruises Unveils Plans for New Ship
Posted 03/14/07
Silversea Cruises signed a memorandum of understanding for one 36,000-ton, 540-guest vessel from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2009. The line also signed an option for a sister ship with Fincantieri. The agreement with Fincantieri is conditional to final contract and financing. However, an irrevocable banking commitment, fully underwritten, has already been obtained and is only subject to the final loan agreement, the company said.
"This is a very exciting time for our company as we are now poised to further develop our unique style of luxury travel with a new generation of ship design," said Silversea Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre. Added Amerigo Perasso, Silversea's recently appointed president: "This newbuild order shows great confidence in the luxury segment's potential for greater demand. Silversea will be well positioned to fully meet this future demand in North America and our international markets."
The newbuild order is the first one for Silversea since 1998 when contracts for Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper were signed. Those vessels entered into service in 2000 and 2001, respectively. With the newbuild, Silversea's overall fleet capacity will grow from 1,356 berths to 1,896 berths, representing a 40 percent increase. Silversea said the purchase price and design details about the new vessel will be forthcoming over the next few weeks.
Oceania Plans Two 1,260-Passenger Newbuilds
Posted 03/15/07
Oceania Cruises signed a memorandum of agreement to build two 1,260-passenger, 65,000-ton ships for delivery in fall 2010 and summer 2011. The ships -- each valued at $500 million -- would be built at Fincantieri's shipyard in Genoa, Italy. The agreement includes an option for a third vessel for delivery in the second quarter of 2012. The deadline for firming up the orders is mid-May while the option would have to be exercised by September 2009. The agreement was announced Wednesday at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami Beach.
"This is one of the Top 10 days of my life and one of the top two or three days in the history of Oceania Cruises," said Frank Del Rio, chairman and CEO of Oceania. "We started this company in 2003 with $14 million in capital."
Two weeks ago, equity firm Apollo Management invested $850 million to become the majority shareholder of Oceania, giving the line the capital it needs to expand. Oceania now operates three 684-passenger ships that were originally built by Del Rio's former company, the now-defunct Renaissance Cruises. The new ships will be more than twice the size of the current 30,277-ton ships, but Del Rio said the newbuilds will maintain the "country club atmosphere similar to a high-end European boutique hotel."
Staterooms will be about 50 percent larger, he said, with 96 percent having ocean views and 93 having private balconies. The 438 Concierge-level staterooms will measure about 300 square feet while the 125 Penthouse Suites will be about 500 square feet. Each ship will have two 2,500-square-foot, two-level Owner's Suites with private elevators and outdoor hot tubs. Other accommodations will include six Vista Suites at the front of the ship and 14 new 1,000-square-foot Oceania Suites on the top deck midships. There will be 26 inside cabins. The ships will boast food and wine enrichment centers for "culinary theater," Del Rio said, as well as movies at night.
Despite the size and cost of the ships, Del Rio maintains Oceania will be able to maintain its relatively affordable pricing for what will remain an upper-premium product. The line regularly offers two-for-one pricing and free economy air. "We want to maintain the price point of about $350 per day," Del Rio said. "It's a sweet spot in the industry.…We don't want to be in the luxury category." The new ships will also have six open-seating restaurants -- including a new Pan-Asian eatery and a French bistro -- that will carry no surcharges. Seating in all restaurants will equal 150 percent of the ship's capacity in a single sitting.

While delving deep into the history and culture of remote destinations larger ships can’t reach, guests sailing with Azamara Cruises also will enjoy a more exclusive guest experience. The name “Azamara” is a coined term, rooted in Romance language references to blue (“aza”), thesea (“mar”), and a lesser-known word, “acamar,” which, in Classical times, was the southernmostbright star that could be seen from the latitude of Greece. Hanrahan said the company views thenew brand as “a bright star on the deep blue sea.” Azamara Cruises unlocks the hidden corners of the world for those who desire to immerse themselves in the rich details of every voyage. The deluxe ships – Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest – offer an intimate experience, while allowing access to exotic destinations experienced travelers long to reach. Cunard's Queen Victoria Continues a Modern Era of Style and Sophistication
Posted 06/07/07
Valencia, CA (June 7, 2007) When the designers of Cunard's newest ocean liner, Queen Victoria, began to consider the ship's interior public spaces, they drew upon the well-recorded and rich history of previous Cunard ocean liners to set the tone. From the ship's double and triple-height spaces - a design feature of grand liners of the past - to rooms imbued with an elegant yet understated British charm, the overall effect is both contemporary and historically classic.
"This will be a unique ship offering our guests a glorious taste of grand ocean liner travel from days gone by, along with every modern convenience. Even the most experienced travelers will be impressed. The ship demonstrates such extraordinary attention to detail, not only in craftsmanship but in the thought that has gone into exceeding our guests' expectations," said Carol Marlow, Cunard's president & managing director.
According to Teresa Anderson, vice president of Interior Design, "Much of Queen Victoria's interior design was inspired and carefully planned to take maximum advantage of the ship's grand spaces. Classical motifs, along with art deco and nouveau touches blend in a subtle continuity and add an element of surprise."
Dramatic architecture and design is evident throughout the ship, with the Grand Lobby serving as a majestic and powerful focal point. The centre of onboard activity, it forms the core from which the ship's other public rooms flow.
Beautifully proportioned, the Grand Lobby's architecture is in keeping with the ambiance of many of Cunard ocean liners of the past while its interior design offers the contemporary elegance of a modern day luxury hotel. The Grand Lobby's dramatic triple height ceiling, sweeping staircase and sculpted balconies create an immediate and unmistakable sense of grandeur and arrival. A signature piece of artwork anchors the staircase landing, affording a breathtaking focal point viewable from nearly every part of the Grand Lobby. An earth tone colour palette of creamy beige, chestnut brown and gold is carried throughout, from light mahogany walls and circular hand-woven area rugs to intricately designed marble floors. Here, guests will conduct shipboard business at the Purser's Desk, catch up on email at the computer centre and move easily to Decks 2 and 3.
Moving forward from the Grand Lobby, guests pass through the Cunardia museum-display, emerging into the dramatic double-height Queens Room, a loggia-style venue, reminiscent of a grand ballroom in a large country house. With ceilings featuring a pair of gleaming crystal chandeliers and the delicate use of gold leaf, the room's styling is light and elegant. Specially commissioned murals - by British artists - reinforce the line's British heritage, as do the activities which will take place here, including afternoon tea, served by white gloved waiters, formal balls with a live orchestra, the traditional Captain's cocktail parties, Cunard World Club events and even fencing classes.
Added Teresa Anderson, "This room's cantilevered balconies overlooking the ballroom are reminiscent of QE2, detailed with classically-ornate, curved railings. The dance floor is hand-crafted of inlaid wood, inviting guests to enjoy the line's grand tradition of elegant ballroom dancing. The room's ceilings, light maple paneled walls and warmly backlit stained glass create a feeling of space and elegance."
In contrast is Hemispheres, an ideal venue for daytime pursuits and a nightclub which will be open into the early hours. The most contemporary area on the ship, it is a geometrically dynamic circular shape that is referenced in design elements throughout. The room's glamorous design is evident from the moment of arrival. A backlit perforated metal sphere encapsulated in decorative glazed screens serves as both a dramatic focal point and privacy-enhancing divider wall as guests enter the room. Light mahogany wood paneling, leather-clad columns, metallic wall surfaces, executed in shades of dark blue, burgundy and gold, give the room a modern sensibility. The circular dance floor is handcrafted wood and is highlighted by a gleaming chandelier suspended above. Panoramic views through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows enhance the dramatic location of this unique venue.
The 90,000-ton Queen Victoria will offer the very best of Cunard's heritage and traditions, along with all modern day luxuries including some exciting innovations. These will include the first traditional West End-style private viewing boxes at sea in the Royal Court Theatre, the first Cunardia museum exhibit at sea, housing Cunard artifacts and memorabilia along with the first two-storey, library at sea featuring an elegant spiral staircase. The ship will also feature the line's celebrated Queens Grill and Princess Grill accommodations and dining, further enhanced on Queen Victoria with exclusive deck terraces and an al fresco dining option.
From the outside, her distinctive black and red livery will hint at the sophistication that differentiates a Cunard liner. This will be most evident in the ship's adherence to liner traditions of the past, with elegant public rooms, many on a grand scale, featuring rich wood paneling, intricate mosaics and gleaming chandeliers. There will also be a grand, colonial-style conservatory complete with a retractable glass roof.
As well as being the second largest Cunarder ever built, Queen Victoria's arrival is particularly noteworthy as it will mark the first time that three Cunard Queens have been in service together in the company's 167-year history (she joins the world's grandest liner, Queen Mary 2 and the world's most famous and best-loved liner, QE2).
